Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Fund for CMC?
Gifts from alumni, parents, and friends of the College are known collectively as The Fund for CMC. During The Campaign for Claremont McKenna the College’s leadership has set a goal of raising $10 million for The Fund for CMC by 2012 to help pay faculty salaries, provide financial aid, maintain the campus and enhance student activities.
What is the CMC Annual Fund?
CMC's Annual Fund is the most popular way that alumni, parents, and friends support the College. Gifts made to the Annual Fund provide "budget relieving" support to some of the most important areas on campus including financial aid, academic support, athletic programs, and student activities. Annual Fund gifts are expended in the same fiscal year in which they are received.
Where exactly do Annual Fund dollars go?
Unless otherwise designated, alumni gifts help support the nearly 57% of all CMC students who receive some form of need-based financial aid.
Gifts from parents help enrich the CMC experience by providing extra support to programs such as the Athenaeum speaker series, 10 research institutes and centers, and other campus programs, clubs, and teams.
Can I designate my gift to something specific on campus?
Although the College prefers to receive unrestricted gifts that can be applied to the most important budgetary needs, some donors prefer to specify the use of their gift. There are many programs, clubs, and teams to which you can designate your gift, including any academic department, any varsity or club sports team, the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum, the Dean of Students fund, and others.
Why is annual giving so important?
Making an annual gift every year makes a statement to corporations, foundations, and college ranking publications, that you believe in Claremont McKenna College's mission and support the unique educational experience that it provides. Your annual gift provides vital support to the immediate operating budget of CMC and helps to ensure that many of the departments, programs, teams, and institutes get the funds they need to provide a college experience of the highest quality while maintaining a balanced budget. It would take an additional million in endowment funds to provide what CMC receives through its Annual Fund programs.
What are this year's Alumni and Parent's Fund goals?
For fiscal year 2010-11 the CMC alumni fund goals are 46% participation and $3 million dollars donated. The Parents Fund goals are 1300 parent gifts and $700,000 dollars donated.
What is the difference between an annual gift and a capital or endowment gift?
Annual gifts are raised each year from alumni, parents and friends of CMC and spent within the same fiscal year. Annual gifts help provide funds to many of the programs and priorities on campus that do not receive regular designated support including financial aid, classroom and athletic equipment, and experience enriching programs around campus.
A capital gift is normally a larger, one-time gift that goes toward projects like new buildings, endowing funds for new professorships, or increasing the general endowment.
How many alumni give to CMC? How does this compare to CMC's peers?
In fiscal year 2009-2010; 4,165 alumni gave over 2.4 million to the Alumni Fund. This represents 42% alumni participation.
How many Parents give to CMC?
In fiscal year 2010-11: 1,267 parents gave over $619,000 to the CMC Parents Fund.
