Welcome to the online home of the Claremont Colleges Debate Union, the nation’s largest college debating society. More than one hundred students participate in competitive, professional, public, and outreach programming each year. This site includes comprehensive information regarding the CCDU's mission and programming.

CCDU membership is open to any undergraduate student of the Claremont Colleges consortium – Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer, Pomona, and Scripps. No prior public speaking or debate experience is necessary to participate. The only requirement is that you affirmatively answer one of the following questions…

Are you interested in intercollegiate debate competition?

The CCDU provides opportunities for national and international parliamentary debating, scheduling approximately 45 tournaments annually, including 10-12 international events. Students participate in competitions featuring diverse parliamentary debate formats. This year, students will attend tournaments and workshops throughout the United States and in the United Kingdom, Canada, China, Turkey, Croatia, Germany, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and Korea.

The Debate Union has been notably successful, winning three national debate championships, as well as more than 150 team and individual debate awards in each of the past 5 years. Approximately 75-90 students compete each year.

 

Interested in public speaking and professional communication training?

 

The Debate Union sponsors scores of public and professional development events each year.

The CCDU sponsors impromptu andextemporaneous public speaking training, hosts public debates and roundtable2 panel discussions on campus and in the community, produces a weekly public affairs cable television program, participates in national and international videoconferencing and internet broadcasts, and organizes professional conferences and seminars.

The CCDU arranges student internships with academic institutions, community service organizations, think tanks, law firms, and national and international nonprofit organizations. Debate Union campus interns produce curricular materials, conduct academic studies for conference presentations and publications, maintain websites and databases, manage projects, and provide administrative support for ongoing operations.

Through Claremont Colleges National Debate Outreach (CCNDO), the Debate Union sponsors educational and service projects, including public speaking and debate training in more than thirty-five secondary school districts throughout the region. The CCNDO operates the nation’s largest and fastest growing debate outreach program, serving more than 5,000 students in 2004-2005. Secondary school students in the outreach network have won national debate championships, select invitational tournaments, and placed in the top ten in the nation in 5 different speech and debate events.

The CCNDO organizes regional competitive leagues, prepares curricular materials, certifies judges for interscholastic competitions, hosts outreach students on campus, and conducts seminars, instructional sessions, and demonstrations for teachers and students. In addition to its extraordinary middle school programming, the CCNDO provides substantial support for class, competitive, and public high school speech and debate activities.

Members of the Debate Union travel throughout the nation and world for competitions and workshops, public debate and speaking tours, and professional and academic conferences. In addition to national tournaments, students have participated in conferences in China, Turkey, Ireland, Canada, South Africa, Australia, Estonia, Egypt, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, the United Kingdom, Latvia, Slovakia, Italy, Romania, Russia, Hungary, Serbia and Montenegro, Germany, Croatia, and Brazil.

The CCNDO has administered secondary school educational and cultural exchanges with Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom.
